Self-discipline is what tells us to not do something that our ego asks us for because we know what’s best for us in the long run. If you struggle with self-discipline or motivation, know that you are not alone. While there are many factors and variables that play into our success and well being, self-discipline can determine how far we’ll go to achieve our goals.
Falling off the wagon here and there is nothing to beat yourself up about – it’s a sign that you’re trying and learning. The knowledge and determination you acquire along your journey are all important to your success, as they are what will help you reach the finish line. No one reaches their weight loss goals without taking a few steps backwards – mistakes are always a part of success.
Practicing better self-discipline starts at home. This process can be hard or even uncomfortable, as it requires us to look inwards and be honest with ourselves. Oftentimes, we conceal some of our thoughts because they are too threatening to acknowledge. Facing our fears and taking control of our thoughts and emotions is the first step to better self-discipline.
1. Define Your Goals
What is it exactly that you want? When coming up with goals, use the SMART model; goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. For example, “I want to lose weight” should be reframed to be more easily achievable, such as “I want to lose 10 pounds in 6 months.”
2. Practice Mindfulness
Our minds are constantly juggling a million different things. Every now and then, your goals deserve undivided attention. Take time each day or week to think about your goals and how you’ve been working towards them. Try journaling if that helps you. Reflecting on your goals and your journey is very helpful at maintaining motivation, creating sources of new motivation, and improving self-discipline.
3. Hold Yourself Accountable
Sometimes, we’re not truthful to ourselves but instead find comfort in excuses. Over time, it can be hard to see this pattern. Unfortunately, this only hurts us and prevents us from achieving our goals. Ask yourself, “how have I worked towards my goals this day/month/week/year?” Remember, it’s never too late to start. Start small and stay consistent.
